Come and Experience the Majesty of Christ!

It is often said within Orthodoxy that modern heresy is simply ancient heresy repackaged. Those who refuse to unite with the One Holy and Apostolic Church in our day are most frequently engaging in the same heresies that separated groups from the Church in the ancient world: The hierarchy, the oral (relational) authority of revelation, the sacraments, icons, the mother of God; These are all real and genuine subjects that are crucial to our relationship with God as Orthodox Christians. Any attempt to publish doctrines against these teachings or attempt to establish a separated church in the spirit of condemning these things, is what we call heterodoxy (false teaching).

With that said, it is not of the Orthodox spirit to condemn non-Orthodox, as if God is not doing anything in their lives. We are ALL created in the image of God, and are capable of spiritual growth. Non-Orthodox will glean from our Canon (the Bible) as well as many other spiritual avenues of our faith, but to hold them up to be a part of the One Holy and Apostolic Church is simply not honest and can be harmful to the spiritual growth of all involved in the conversation.

THE CHRISTIAN LIFE IS MONASTIC LIFE

To a culture whose core values are self-fulfillment, self-satisfaction, and self-sovereignty, Orthodox monastic life appears as an affront and a scandal. What could be more contrary to our individualistic society which prizes comfort, ease, and “freedom” above all other concerns than a life of utter self-abasement, strict obedience, and striving after Holy suffering for Christ’s sake?

U četvrtom veku živeo je čovek po imenu Mojsije. Mojsije je bio afričkog porekla, tačnije Etiopljanin, krupnoga stasa i izuzetne pameti. 

Kao mladić, Mojsije je bio jedan od najopasnijih razbojnika u Severnoj Africi. On je bio vođa razbojničke bande i poznat po tome što je nožem klao ljude. Mojsijevi razbojnici su sejali pustoš i pljačkali kuće, otimali imovinu da bi je notom prodavali i od tog novca živeli raspusnim razbojničkim životom. Kada nije bio u pljački, Mojsije je žestoko pijančio i provodio noći sa raspusnim ženama.

LIVING THE ORTHODOX WORLDVIEW

FATHER SERAPHIM ROSE - 

Thirty-one years ago today, Hieromonk Seraphim Rose (Eugene Rose before monasticism) reposed in the Lord at the age of 48. Since then, his works have reached around the globe, and encouraged Orthodox Christians to look always toward the Resurrected Lord and to do the work of God without delay, because it is “later than you think”.

By some (and we are talking about Orthodox Christians, because he is little discussed by others) his views are considered “extreme”, or unhealthily “fundamentalist”. However, Fr. Seraphim did not start a sect based on his own teachings; he delved into the Orthodoxy he had embraced with his whole heart, never looking back at what he had left behind. Those who knew Fr. Seraphim personally remember most vividly his simplicity, and his rejection of any pretense to dictate the behavior of others. As a monk he was entirely non-acquisitive, and led a severe way of life, but he did not demand this of people in the world. His words revealed to others who wished to hear them what he had discovered, but he did not force them upon anyone. People must be receptive to the truth before they can hear it and follow it. As he wrote in God’s Revelation to the Human Heart:

Why is the truth, it would seem, revealed to some and not to others? Is there a special organ for receiving revelation from God? Yes, though usually we close it and do not let it open up: God’s revelation is given to something called a loving heart.

This indicates that no matter how often we might hear the truth, if we have no love, we will not receive it; and to the contrary, though we may not even be searching for the truth, but have love, the truth may find us. But if others have not found the truth it would be madness for us to condemn them, saying “we have found the truth”, because our own possession of truth depends upon our loving heart.

After entering the Orthodox Church, Fr. Seraphim found it necessary to leave the ways of the world behind. He renounced the world and became a monk. He did not tell others to become monks—this is a very personal life choice. But as a man who cared about others, he could not but warn them of dangers to the soul inherent in the modern world. An example of this can be found in one of his recorded lectures, “Living the Orthodox Worldview”.

Ten years ago today, the outstanding missionary, Metropolitan Anthony (Bloom) of Surouzh, reposed in the Lord. Metropolitan Anthony was a prolific writer and preacher, and left volume of inspiration for the Christian life. In honor of his repose day, we present one of his many powerful homilies.

I do not mean to give a complete exposition of Christianity. I want to take a certain number of points which I think are relevant for the Christian and which are relevant for anyone who wishes to understand himself and the situation in which we as Christians find ourselves. Perhaps when I say 'we Christians' I go beyond the limits of what I should say; perhaps I should say 'the way in which one Christian who belongs to the Russian Church understands it', because it will be a personal contribution. It is offered not as a teaching but to stimulate thought.

Beogradski rock publicist i autor knjige Električna zastava govori o autentičnosti rocka i intimnom doživljaju glazbe, o odbačenima i avanturistima na rubu egzistencije, o slušanju glazbe kao inicijaciji. Žikica Simić pisao je rock publicistiku za časopise Pop/Rock, Ritam, Vreme zabave, XZ, te dnevni list Danas. Na B92 ima stalnu emisiju Dole na uglu. Ove mu je godine izašla knjiga Električna zastava, antologija tekstova koje je napisao u posljednjih dvadesetak godina. 

Bio je jedan od rijetkih autora – u smislu u kojemu se autorstvo spominje u vezi s npr. Lesterom Bangsom – čiji su tekstovi smanjivali intenzitet tame i svojim pristupom pokazali da je, bez obzira na devastiranost većine stvari oko nas i u nama, i dalje moguće živjeti dostojanstven život. Žikica Simić nije ni legenda ni kultni autor, jer je to danas bezmalo pa svatko. On je, jednostavno, čuvar plamena. Knjigu za hrvatsko tržište distribuira koprivnički Šareni dućan. Words and Music: a history of pop in the shape of a city, by Paul Morley

Paul Morley is a highly influential rock journalist who worked for the New Musical Express in the late 70s and early 80s. He quit writing full-time about pop music at the age of twenty-five because he felt he had gotten too old.

In Words and Music Morley (now middle aged) takes the reader on a journey towards a virtual city built of sound and ideas. The book is ostensibly inspired by his two favourite pieces of music at the time of writing. I am sitting in a room by Alvin Lucifer, an avant-garde piece involving the overlaying of voices, and number one hit single I can’t get you out of my head by Kylie Minogue. A succession of other celebrities and artists also appear led by Kraftwork, Brian Eno, Lou Reed, Radiohead, John Cage, Eric Satie, Eminem, and Jarvis Cocker.

On route to the city the ubiquitous author takes many unexpected detours, travelling deeper into the back roads of his own obsessions, some of them real, others imagined. While musing on the nature of what it means to write about music Morley debates his position in the pantheon of great rock writers, before concluding that he is himself the greatest. Another winding route involves an alternate reality where The Shadows didn’t work with Cliff Richard, instead they collaborated with DJ Shadow, shaping dense, mysterious tapestries of instrumental electro/acoustic trip-hop evoking the kind of enigma that justifies their name.

Lists are a way of ordering the infinitely multiplicitous and endlessly evolving universe we are all a part of. This book has lots of lists, but contains so much more, in no small part due to the science fiction sense of wonder and awe feeding into and branching out from Morley’s prose style. This is a book that expresses an enthusiasm for the discoveries that are yet to be made, and a celebration of the inspirations that preceded them: "even though it has all happened before, everything has been done, every variation of everything has been tried, there continues to be something new under the sun".

Words and Music is verbose and self-indulgent – both plus points here - thoughtful and compelling too, and also beautifully written. Highly recommended to all lovers of words and/or music.
